
Tetouan and the Mediterranean coast
The town of Tetouan is the capital and cultural centre of the region of Tangiers in North Morocco. It is also considered as the most « Andalusian » town in the kingdom and, in 1999, it became the principal summer residence of King Mohammed VI.
Tetouan is located in the Rif, a geographical district characterised by mountainous terrain, about 100 kilometres from Tangiers, close to the Straits of Gibraltar.
Near to Tetouan are a number of tourist villages such as Marina Smir and Cabo Negro.
Tetouan’s economy at the present time, founded basically on small business and seaside tourism, is aimed at the Moroccan market but also an increasingly international one.
